8 Sheffield-Chapin, away (5-10). The Ventura Vikings hope to make up for their lack of size with speed. Coach Mike Kavars has five lettermen in Doug Christiansen (6), Charles Reon-fanz (5-11), Steve Gisel (6-1), Doug Ransom (6) and Terry Anderson (5-9). Jerry Dunbar in his first year as basketball coach at Meserv-ey-Thornton was 12-5 and this year faces a new season without a single starter returning. Dar win Pals (6-1) and Brian Nissen (5-11), both juniors, should be the Lancers more consistent scorers.

Steve Pals and Steve Opperman are two Other letter- men. Top candidates for starting jobs are Randy Ruiter (6-1), Lynn Wood (6-2), Steve Schmidt (5-11), Bob Vierkant (6-3), Al Deike (5-10), and Doug Halfpap (6). Corwith-Wesley was 2-15 year ago and five seniors have graduated. Returning players included 2-year lettermen Dave Weber (5-9) and Casey Fairbanks. ROCKWELL-SWALEDALE Nov.

15 Rockwell-Swaledale, away (boys) Curt Barber, David Coyle, Kim Nielsen, Randy Pederson, Steve Wickett and Terry Froehlich. Dennis Hillyer at CAL has the oop top rebounder in noa Pralle, 6-3 senior, but would like more consistent scoring at tack. Pralle averaged 12.8 and 5-10 guard John Hensel aver aged 12.1. Alan Menning (6-2), Jody Plagge (5-10) and Dale etsch (6-2) give the Cadets ex perience and good height. CAL was 9-10 in 1971.

Boone Valley is expecting a good year with five returning lettermen but the Bobcats will be on the short side. Veterans are Jim Lane (5-9), Dale Rei- chter (5-9), Paul James (5-9), Steve Erwin (6) and Mike Swan (5-10). Last year Lane hit 10.9 per game and Erwin averaged 13.4. Nonlettermen juniors have more height as Vera Dow is 6-4 Fitch 6-1 and Rich Nickell (6). Kanawha's front line of Dave Ruter, Steve Eekhoff and Perry Eekhoff are all 6-1.

Coach Kerry Van Winkle rates the trio as good rebounders with quickness and scoring ability. Ruter was a first-team selection last year when "he scored 14.8 points a game. Perry Eekhoff averages 14.1. Guards are seniors Dave De- Waard (5-6) and Dennis Lodin (5-6). Prospects are Marvin Trenary (5-8), Ned Harle (5-8), Kelvin Eekhoff (5-11) and Mitch Friedow (5-9).

The Bulldogs were 6-11 last season. Klemme's Tom Busch lost three fine shooters from the 1971 team which was 6-12 so the Shamrocks must come up with some scoring punch. Experienced personnel are Ross Bosworth (6-1), a 12.3 av erage scorer; Mike Denny (5- 10), Greg Scott (5-10), Rob Schoenwetter (5-10), Murray Katter (6-1) and Lance Arnold (6-1). Prospects are Dennis Lau (6-1), Steve Denny (5-8), Dav has MAGG new (6-4) is the fourth outstanding newcomer. McKissick was the only unanimous all-City Conference selection as a junior and a senior.

He averaged 28.5 a game for James Madison High, the top scoring rate in Milwaukee. His shooting percentage as a senior was 52. Two other prospects from Mil waukee are Landon Dedmon, 6- 0, a teammate of McKissick, and Jim Holifield. The 6-2 Holi-field played for Rufus King High, which placed second in the Wisconsin state tournament. Three other Mason City play ers are on the squad.

Brian Long is a 6-7 non-letterman sophom*ore. Bob Lemon (5-9) av eraged 9.2 points a game as a guard starter for the Mohawks last season. Mick Lloyd, 5-10 guard, held the top scoring av erage at Newman High the past two seasons. As a junior he was 14.8 for 13 'games and was 16.2 the past season. Another non-letterman sophom*ore is Randy Lamker (6-3) of Monona.

Forward Mike Lemke have John Pittman (6-5), Dave Lauck (64), J. C. Kain (6-3), Lance Mueller (6), Jim Cubit (5-10), Mick Anderson (6), Kennv Mains (6) and Scott Voyles (6). The Clear Lake Lions will be short on experience as the two returning lettermen are Brad Arends (6-4), second-team North Central Conference forward, and Bill Larson, 6-1 forward. Larson is a question mark be cause of a back injury.

"Our club will have good overall size with most players at 6-1 to 6-3 range. We should have im proved speed, quickness and outside scoring from last year," comments coach Jim Ahrens. "Our sophom*ore squad was 15-3 in 1971 and will have to ma ture early in the season if Clear Lake is to be a contender." Senior prospects are Rich Woiwood (5-10), Jay Hutchison 12-11 team to average in double figures. Benn still shot at a 49-per cent clip despite being double teamed most of the time. His 505 points for a season and points in one game stood as school records for one year.

Dennis Shaffer, 6-3 forward- guard, broke both of those Benn records. The slender whiz card ed a 28.6 average, scoring 714 points on an 18-7 club. One night against Charles City, Shaffer poured in 51 points. Shaffer made 252 of 500 fieldgoal at tempts for the season (50.4 per cent) and was 82.7 per cent on freethrows. The Mohawks defeated Algona for third place in the 1971 tournament and top scorer for the losing Bulldogs was Kent Espe.

The 6-2 Espe also is a Trojan freshman this season. In building a 17-point scoring average, Espe made 55 per cent of his fieldgoals (154 for 281). He was 82 per cent 'on freethrows, and like Benn and Shaffer, was his team's leading rebounder. Milwaukee's Terry McKissick Lakers The North Central Conference has two new basketball coaches this season as Royce Smith has taken over for Jack Sogard at Hampton and Vera Pinnt has replaced Don Fuerhoff at Iowa Falls. The one thing that hasn't changed is Algona.

The defend ing champs are strong again. Howie Stephenson has lost Kent Espe, Rick Nielsen, Bruce Johnson, Jim Harris and Gordie Zie-gler from his state tournament team. But returning are junior Ran dy Roeber, who now is 6-9; Dick Manske (6) and Gary Walker (6-3). Roeber and Walker were starters a year ago when the Bulldogs finished 22-3 and Manske was a first line replace ment. There is even more size among the prospects.

They are By WARREN ROGERS Rockwell Swaledale is the only school to win the North Star Conference boys championship three years in a row, the Rebels doing it in 1965-66-67, and coach Randy Arends has a chance to do it again. This new string of two in a row is slightly different from the mid-1960 streak. The Rebels shared the 1966 title with Gold-field. They've been greedy the last seasons, winning in 1970 with a 9-1 mark and in 1971 with a perfect 10-0 performance. Rockwell-Swaledale lose a game last season until the first round of the state tourna ment.

Two starters return from that 25-1 club. They are 6-4 center Dale Proc tor and guard Tom Eddy (6). Paul Cole (6) and Mark Scholl (6-1) did see quite a bit of action as forwards. Senior guards are Duane Dannen (5-11) and Jim Hamilton (5-8). The Rebs' B-team was unde feated last year and up from that squad are Jon Caspers (6-4), Tim Ginapp (6-1), Doug Pruin (5-11), Greg Jones (5-11), Gary Taylor (5-10) and Doug Drury (5-10).

Goldfield will be one of the top challengers with first team per former Larry Frakes (6-4) re turning. Frakes was the confer ence's top scorer last year with 24.4 and was ninth in rebound ing. Gary Sheets (64), Dave Stevenson (5-9), Mike Romsey (5-11) and Mike Whyte (5-10) also return. Coach of the Indians this year is Mike Brinsko. Sheffield-Chapin, 13-6 1 a I year, will have to do without all-conference player Dale Grei mann, who was injured in foot ball.

It's doubtful the 17.1 aver age scorer will return. Coach Jim Cuvelier, however, has Roger Stock, 6-3 forward and the No. 3 scorer of a year ago with an 18.7 average; Dar- ryl Peter (6-2), a strong reboun der; Mick Pals (5-11), Jim Atkinson (5-8), Gary Schoning (5- 11) and Terry Peter (6-1). LuVerne was a young team a year ago with only two seniors on the 13-11 club. Coach Bryce Wickett has the No.

2 scorer in the conference in Dennis Vaudt (19-5). The Moot senior also was 5th in rebounding. Others team are Terry Tomke (6) and John Heard (6-1). Candidates include 5-10 sophom*ore Jim Loux, 6-2 junior Denny Janson and 6-foot senior Steve Hiltabiddle. The Eagles were 9-10 last year.

Fran Jones' Webster City squad has four lettermen for nucleus. The Lynx were 12-7 last season. Returning are Nic Morton (6-2), Marty Eslick (8), Tom Williams (5-10) and John Halverson (5-10). At Humboldt, coach John Westphal has only two letter- men returning from last sea son's 13-7 team. They are John Larson and Greg Emick.

Clar ion, which was only 4-17 last season, has three returning let- terwinners under coach Do Smith. They are Craig Camp- bell, Mike McCool and Jeff Kopps. ALGONA Nov. 19 Spencer, away Nov. 26 Fort Dodge, away Dec.

We will have five men on the floor that can shoot We expect to be faster, run more on offense and have a quicker, tighter defense," says Komgsmark. The thing which gripes Kon igsmark most about the disappointing 12-11 season of a year ago was the defense. The oppo nents averaged 83 points a game and that's the most since Kon igsmark took over.

The Trojans will open their season Nov. 27 at North Hennepin and the first home game will be Dec. 2 against Austin young (6-2), and Paul Schoneman (6-1). 18 Clear Lake, awav Feb. 23-Webster City, home By WARREN ROGERS It doesn't make any difference how many zone defenses are devised or new offenses installed, the game of basketball has one basic principle that's to put the ball through the hoop. If a team puts it through more than the other team, it wins. North Iowa Area Community College coach Herb Konigsmark feels he has the sharpshooters to do this and present a very interesting team this season. Konigsmark is very meticulous with his records and the most recent tabulations show that the 1970-71 team was the best shooting club he has had in three years as head coach.

The club had a team fieldgoal percentage of 42.8. He has six leftennen back from' that 12-11 team including 6-5 front-court man Jerry Lehman of Iowa City Regina. Lehman's 49.3 fieldgoal percentage is a NIACC record. Other sophom*ore lettermen are 6-3 Gene Wall of DeWitt, who averaged 10.8 last season; 6-5 Steve Hansen of Boone Valley, 6-3 Ron Ginapp of Belmond, 6-5 Dave Benn of Rake and 6-3 Mark Knudtson of Northwood, the team's top scorer a year ago with 299 points, a 13-point average. Four newcomers have especially impressive credentials.
