We have some egg-cellent and egg-citing news to share. Vital Farms is coming to Seymour. This morning at Seymour City Hall, Vital Farms, a Certified B corporation that offers a range of ethically produced foods nationwide, announced plans to expand its supply chain with a second world-class egg washing and packing facility in Seymour's Eastside Industrial Park. The 72-acre future home of Egg Central Station Seymour will build upon key successes from the brand’s first facility in Springfield, Missouri. The new facility will enable Vital Farms to continue growing its pasture-raised egg business, create 150-plus jobs for the Seymour community in its first phase and is expected to help generate more than $350 million in additional revenue for the brand as it pushes to a 2027 target of $1 billion in company revenues.Putting down roots in Seymour for Vital Farms’ second facility allows the brand to continue to expand its strong network of more than 300 family farms to support new farm development within a day’s drive of the new facility. Vital Farms expects this new facility in its first phase will support approximately 165 family farmers producing the leading U.S. brand of pasture-raised eggs by retail dollar sales.ECS Seymour will build upon the foundational key learnings and successes from Vital Farms’ award-winning egg washing and packing facility in Springfield, Missouri, Egg Central Station, which opened in 2017 and whose expansion achieved LEED Gold Certification in 2024.The facility will feature similar environmental stewardship goals incorporated into the site plans in addition to a flow-through design to improve safety and efficiency of the overall operation. Similar to its operation in Springfield, ECS Seymour will utilize industry-leading automation for processing equipment to improve overall production efficiency and quality and will employ a world-class crew to lead the way in bringing this new facility to life.ECS Seymour is expected to break ground mid-2025 and be fully operational at the beginning of 2027.Started on a single farm in Austin, Texas, in 2007, Vital Farms is now a national consumer brand that works with more than 300 family farms and is the leading U.S. brand of pasture-raised eggs by retail dollar sales. The company's ethics are exemplified by its focus on the humane treatment of farm animals and sustainable farming practices. In addition, as a Delaware public benefit corporation, Vital Farms prioritizes the long-term benefits of each of its stakeholders, including farmers and suppliers, customers and consumers, communities and the environment and crew members and stockholders.Vital Farms’ products, including shell eggs, butter, hard-boiled eggs and liquid whole eggs, are sold in approximately 24,000 stores nationwide. The pasture-raised eggs also can be found on menus at hundreds of food service operators across the country. For information, visit vitalfarms.com.

What they had to say ... on Vital Farms choosing Seymour to expand its supply chain with a second world-class egg washing and packing facility. The 72-acre future home of Egg Central Station Seymour will build upon key successes from the brand’s first facility in Springfield, Missouri. The new facility will enable Vital Farms to continue growing its pasture-raised egg business, create 150-plus jobs for the Seymour community in its first phase and is expected to help generate more than $350 million in additional revenue for the brand as it pushes to a 2027 target of $1 billion in company revenues.“Indiana has been on a roll lately,” said Trevor Lane, director of attractions for the South Region of Indiana Economic Development Corporation. “We’ve got over $56 billion of new capex (capital expenditures) committed to the state of Indiana since January 2023, and we have the possibility of doubling that this year.”He said the Vital Farms team is part of that."We want to attract as many projects to Indiana as we can," Lane said, noting the high wages and capital investment Vital Farms is bringing to Seymour. "Thank you very much for your commitment to Indiana, and we look forward to working with you."

#ManufacturingMonday Seymour Home Products in Seymour is the only ironing board manufacturer in the United States. The company traces its roots to 1942 when Seymour Tool and Engineering was established. In 1966, it was renamed Seymour Industries and began making ironing boards, other housewares and Beauti-Glide metal bed frames. Two years later, Chemical Ventures Partners of New York bought the company from Lear Siegler in 1968 and renamed it Seymour Housewares Corp. Then in 1986, Seymour Housewares started making ironing board covers. In 1998, Home Products International paid $100.6 million, and the ironing boards made here became part of HPI’s full line of laundry, storage and bath products.Market conditions driven largely by the COVID-19 pandemic combined with unprecedented inflation in steel costs and global supply chain challenges made it impossible for HPI to continue to operate profitably. In March 2022, Chicago, Illinois-based Home Products International-North America Inc. announced it intended to pursue an exit of its Seymour-based garment care and home organization businesses to focus on its core plastics business. HPI owned and operated several metal stamping plants and distribution centers in Seymour.HPI closed May 27, 2022. But on Sept. 6 that year, the company reopened under the name Seymour-MFG.LLC with the operating name Seymour Home Products.HDS Trading Corp. of New Jersey, which was established in 2002 as a vendor in the housewares products market and has grown to include more than 4,000 diverse items, purchased the building, land and assets but not the company.Sources: seymour-mfg.com, tribtown.com

#FunFactFridayLouis Schneck (the namesake of Schneck Medical Center in Seymour) was born in Württemberg, Germany, on May 1, 1831.He came to America in 1852 with his parents. The family first settled in Cincinnati, Ohio, and later moved to Jeffersonville, where Louis entered the grocery and bakery business. He conducted profitable until 1864 when on account of failing health, the business was disposed of and he and his family moved to a farm just west of Seymour. Later, he moved from the farm to the city.In 1872 when Seymour Woolen Mill was organized, Louis was made president and general manager, which he held until his death Feb. 5, 1905. He also was vice president of First National Bank and had many other business interests here and elsewhere, and he owned several farms. He was a devout member of the German Methodist church, filling the office of trustee for many years and organizing the first German Sunday school in Seymour. In politics, Louis was a Republican from the time that party was organized. He represented Jackson and Lawrence counties in the state Senate from 1894 to 1898, and that was the only public office he ever held.In his obituary, he was described as "one of the foremost and most useful citizens," "ever ready to do his full part toward any public enterprises," "always supported and aided every movement for the public good," "always loyal and his influence and support counted for much" and "one of the wealthiest and most prominent citizens of Jackson County."Source: Seymour Republican
